Strong foundation.I've put off writing this review for no other reason than the fact that I wished that I had written this book myself. The author and I couldn't be further apart in our political views and, our experience with working dogs. We were friends on FB for a time but I think I was dropped a good while back. When I picked this title up at the bookstore I was positive that I wouldn't like it and convinced that it would just be another academics story about their walk on the wild side and a monotonous, multisyllabic argument on how the working community, the werkin folk, we're doing it wrong.I couldn't have been more wrong!What I got was an honest, humble, extraordinarily well-researched tomb on a novice's introduction to the real world of working canines. It is painfully honest in its discussion of the highs, lows, and the struggles, required to 1, gain an introduction into a community that is not always willing to welcome newbies with open arms and 2, the steep learning curve that includes vocabulary and technique. The third and final variable is intestinal fortitude to stay the course. I will humbly submit that...Cat Warren has more than enough grit.During the course, you will meet some amazing trainers and handlers, work through struggles with the author and, if you are new to the world of working dogs, save yourself an amazing amount of trial and error that Ms. Warren has already worked through and researched and, been gracious enough to present in print for those that want to avoid the pitfalls.General Schwarzkopf said that the best way to walk through a minefield was to follow the explosions. Well, for those of you with "werkin" aspirations, Cat Warren has lead the way, cleared the field and been gracious enough to provide you with the map.
