Even though the technology and world are set pretty far in the future it still feels like near term sci-fi in some ways. Mostly from the background I think, humanity survived a crash and joined together to pull itself forward. Similarly aspirational are the story of the NeoG, the men and woman like our coast guard, often unsung but there to help when people need them.Overall I liked the characters and found their personalities entertaining and reasonably realistic for their world. I liked that the story showed a breadth of characters. In terms of story the two parallel story lines, the games and the mystery, were each individually not bad but not enough for a book alone. That said they didn't quite mesh and stayed parallel, barely touching for both good and bad. It would have been nice had there been a deeper dive into the esprit de corps of the NeoG and their work in the black.It wasn't just the separate disjoint stories that kept this book at only good instead of great, I also felt the lieutenant's romance fell short. I guess bit could have been an intentional extension of her sheltered backstory but while I read the scenes that were supposed to be the sparks of interest I felt that any sparks fizzled. It just never felt like it clicked to me.
